Last Class!  Presentations of group projects tonight.  Here is what your presentation and report should consist of.  Note that I have added some additional comments - see the text in purple.  Don't forget that I need your written reports by 4:00pm so that I can make copies.

Monday, April 29, 2002

I'm looking up some resources for those two groups still having problems, namely the NT and W2K groups.  Kind of funny - I thought those would be the first ones done.  Anyway, since this is the last official night of class, I will be opening the room early, around 4:30pm.  That way your groups can come in and that will give you nearly 2 hours before class to get some more work done.

Last scheduled class period!  Last night to do a Tech Tip  If you don't do your TT tonight, you won't have another chance.

An example of the importance of physical security

Where were you at 9:40am last Tuesday morning?  Power outage on campus!  Lasted about 75 minutes, and it took another hour or so to get everything back to normal.

New RFC

We will be having a quiz tonight.  It will be multiple-choice and consist of 12 questions.  And no, it won't be posted on the bulletin board until after the class! (thanks for asking, anyway).  I will also pass out our final quiz, and it is due on Friday.  It will be a take-home quiz, using NO notes, NO books, nor any collusion or group work.

* Quiz over chapter 7
* Assignment Four collected.  REMINDER: It's a group project and the answers must be typed out (no handwritten answers).  One report per group.
* break
* Work on group projects (Note: those groups that have completed their work and have a working network can leave)

Happy Tax Day!

Plan for tonight:

* Tech Tips
* Quiz over chapter 6
* Assignment Four handed out (due April 22).  It's a group project and the answers must be typed out (no handwritten answers).  One report per group.

  Some of the groups are getting very very close to having their networks operational!

Gigabit ethernet prices in free-fall

I had a comment from a student about the quiz, saying that "they" could not find the answers.  Didn't I make it clear that this was an individual, no notes/books quiz?  Based on the grades, it appears that was not followed.  We are going to discuss this in class on Monday.

Looking at the schedule, we only have four more classes after tonight!  So here is my plan:
April 8
Finish Panko, chapter 6
Group work on projects

April 15
Panko, chapters 7 and 8 (subset of each)
QUIZ over chapter 6
Group work on projects as needed/time permitting

April 22
Panko, chapter 10
System administration (lecture, handouts)
QUIZ over chapters 7 and 8
Group work on projects as needed/time permitting

April 29
Panko, Module F
System administration (lecture, handouts)
QUIZ over chapter 10 and Module F and lecture from 4/22
Group work on projects as needed/time permitting

May 6
Instead of a final exam, each group will present a detailed explanation of how they implemented their network.  Outsiders will be invited!

Assignment Three due on Monday, April 8 (group project)

Chapter Six (Panko book) review  The text highlighted in yellow are the important points for the chapter.

Want to know more about email?  Read the RFC!  Specifically, 4.5.1 for what Creighton is doing about on-campus mail servers.

We've had two power outages on campus in the last few days, one on Friday around 1930 and again Monday morning around 0820.  Both are OPPDs problem, but... more in class tonite.

For Panko, chapter Six: Novell uptime winners and for *nix systems.  Here are some uptimes for Creighton systems.  My personal best?  Over 420 days on the old sparrow.creighton.edu.  Longest uptime in COBA?  Wade5 at 182 days.

Tonight we will start with the Tech Tips, and then I want to work on installing the operating systems on your computers.  If we have time, I have some TCP/IP and networking questions to work on as a class.  I plan to have a short quiz on some topics discussed by Jack Winslade last week.

FCC NIXES MORE CABLE BROADBAND REGULATION
The Federal Communications Commission ruled that Internet access via high-speed, interactive cable modems should be classified as an "information service" rather than a "telecommunications service," a decision that liberates cable companies from the more stringent common carrier regulations that govern most telecom companies. The agency also ruled that cable modems did not qualify as a "cable service," which prevents local governments from creating and selling separate franchises for cable ISPs or levying higher fees on cable companies that market broadband services. Consumer groups protested the decision, saying that it could lead to cable company control over pricing and over the content their customers can receive via broadband. (Financial Times 14 Mar 2002)

If you haven't done a Tech Tip yet, you need to do one tomorrow night or your midterm grade will suffer for it. I will start the class with Tech Tips. Make sure that you turn in a printed copy of your tip for my records so I can record the grade.

ASSIGNMENT - for your group project, a Configuration Plan needs to be laid out.  See the link for more information.  In class tonight I will talk about a different way we are going to work with hardware than what I originally planned to do.

TECH TIPS - we are behind on doing these, so first thing in class today we will do those from last week and those from this week.  Be prepared to do your tip.  Make sure that you type out a description of your Tip and turn it in during your presentation.  If you do not turn in a printed description of your tip it may not be graded.

Guest speaker update:  Jack Winslade is coming on Monday, March 18th to talk about how Sitel handles their WANs and LANs, both data and phone.  I am also working to get a speaker from Cox to come and talk about their Internet, Phone and Cable service.

Class note: I have arranged a tour of the campus switchroom for next week, February 4.  I am asking everyone to come to class early, so that we can start at 6:00pm.  We will meet in BA 111 where you will leave your backpacks, books, coats, etc. and then proceed to the location.  This is a first for us - the first time that any class has gotten a tour of the switchroom.  Anyone not in the classroom when we leave it around 6:10pm will not be able to make the tour.  No backpacks, bags, etc. on the tour please!  Our guide will be Rick "Bro" Brokofsky, Director of Telecommunications.  Check out the department org chart here or look at this picture of Larry Sheldon in the switchroom.   This is going to be fun!!

Would you buy a used router from this man?

Class Mailing List
Everyone needs to join our class listserv, as I will send out announcements, sample questions, etc. to the list via email.  I cannot make you join, but you will miss out if you are not on the list and I am not responsible for any material you miss if you are not on the list.  To join the list, do the following:
  * send a message to majordomo@creighton.edu
  * in the body of the message, put the words subscribe mis470
  * send the message
This list is closed and unmoderated, meaning that you cannot join without my permission.   Once you are in, you can post a message to everyone on the list.  I recommend that you use your Creighton email account, as free services such as Hotmail and Yahoo have quotas or stop their SMTP services.  I am not responsible should you use a free service and do not get your messages from me.
