If you are interested in reading the newsletter you can access it from the IT homepage or go directly to it by clicking on the following URL http://www.creighton.edu/IT/newsletter/current. Dr. Zowie writes: "This morning at about 10:00 UT, a major explosion occured on the Sun. The solar X-ray output went up by over 1,000 times. About a billion tons of material are speeding toward Earth at over a million miles per hour, and should hit sometime in the next couple of days. Low latitude aurorae and anomalies in radio communications and power service are likely consequences. You can see the event from the SOHO spacecraft's home page -- images and movies are here. In the movies, watch for the burst of radiation hitting SOHO about 13:00 UT -- that's a high energy proton storm caused by the flare itself. You can also see the earthly effects of a similar event from last year."
Thursday, September 20, 2001 Due to the important speech by the President tonite at 8:00pm, I will be cutting class short. We will start at 6:15pm and then stop shortly before 8:00pm. You will have the choice of leaving, staying to work in the classroom until 11:00pm when the CUWOC closes, or watching the Presidential address in the conference room. I would normally break and then start class again, but this congressional address could run long. Largest supercomputer to do global weather simulation "Freedom Flies From Terror" - an editorial about the events after 9/11 Judges will have their Internet use monitored after all Not exactly a computer question, but more of a privacy concern: A woman was filmed, in public, doing embarrassing things that were recorded on a "Girls Gone Wild" videotape and is being sold. The FBI is issuing search warrants to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to gather information about any emails, etc. that might be related to the terrorist attacks. It appears that both AOL and Earthlink are cooperating with authorities, based on this story. It appears that the Feds are now pushing the installation of Carnivore onto ISPs. Thursday, August 23, 2001 Welcome! This is going to be an interesting class - this is the first time that I have taught out at the West Campus location, and also the first time I have taught this class in an eight-week session. COBA is going wireless! Dean Pitts has approved the installation of wireless transmitters in the Eppley building. We will be placing two transmitters on the first floor, one each on the second and third floors, and two on the fourth floor. This should be exciting! The Powerpoints from the publishers are *still* not here. As soon as they arrive I will post them on the site and update the link from here. When we get into the networking chapter, we will discuss this in more depth. Thanks to Jay Langhurst for this graphic.
