Napster Trial Twist

Tuesday, October 9, 2001

My Schedule this week:
I've got a bunch of meetings this week.  On Tuesday I will be at the dentist in the morning and won't be back in the office until after lunch.  Wednesday I have an employee seminar from 8:30 to 11:30, and then a lunch seminar from 11:30 to 1:00pm, and will need to leave around 4:00pm.  Thursday morning we have a COBA staff meeting from 8:30 to 9:30 or so, and then I am scheduled to make a presentation to the SAC (Staff Advisory Council) at 1:00pm (till 1:30 or ??).

I'll be around campus, but not necessarily in my office.  I would recommend that you email me first, and then call me second.

Dr. Zowie writes: "This morning at about 10:00 UT, a major explosion occured on the Sun. The solar X-ray output went up by over 1,000 times. About a billion tons of material are speeding toward Earth at over a million miles per hour, and should hit sometime in the next couple of days. Low latitude aurorae and anomalies in radio communications and power service are likely consequences. You can see the event from the SOHO spacecraft's home page -- images and movies are here. In the movies, watch for the burst of radiation hitting SOHO about 13:00 UT -- that's a high energy proton storm caused by the flare itself. You can also see the earthly effects of a similar event from last year."

Due to the important speech by the President tonite at 8:00pm, I will be cutting class short.  We will start at 6:15pm and then stop shortly before 8:00pm.  You will have the choice of leaving, staying to work in the classroom until 11:00pm when the CUWOC closes, or watching the Presidential address in the conference room.  I would normally break and then start class again, but this congressional address could run long.

REMINDER: Larry Sheldon is guest speaking on Tuesday, instead of tonite.

REMINDER: Exam over chapters 1-3 tonite, first thing in class.  After everyone is done with the exam, we will continue with the Hardware presentation.  Don'tcha just love talking about hardware?

The FBI is issuing search warrants to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to gather information about any emails, etc. that might be related to the terrorist attacks.  It appears that both AOL and Earthlink are cooperating with authorities, based on this story.  It appears that the Feds are now pushing the installation of Carnivore onto ISPsCoursey: How terrorists got your privacy rights, too.

Info on the exam - it will be true/false, some multiple choice, and four short answer questions, of which you will pick and answer only two.  You will have enough time to complete the exam (an hour?  We'll see) and then after everyone is done, we will start the regular class.  I have copied handouts of the Hardware lecture and we will start that after the exam.

News sites reel from air attacks
By Jim Hu Special to ZDNet News
September 11, 2001 8:28 AM PT

Moments after airplanes separately crashed into both towers of the World Trade Center, and then later the Pentagon, Web sites for the major news outlets were swamped by an overflow of traffic. Major Web news outlets such as CNN.com, MSNBC.com, Yahoo News, ABCNews.com and FoxNews.com have been left unaccessible or slow to respond.

"We expect traffic demands to site to be enormous, but right now tabulating audience isn't a priority," said MSNBC spokesman Ben Billingsley. "We're dedicating all of our resources to covering this story thoroughly and accurately."

Jim42688 writes: "Looks like the prices Amazon was reporting for Windows XP a while back were right. On the back of today's ad for CompUSA, it lists the prices to preorder. Home Full, 199.99, Home Upgrade, 99.99. Professional full, 299.99, Professional upgrade, 199.99." Perfect timing -- Fwis writes: "Use your power as a consumer to Boycott XP. The site is now functioning smoothly, and we invite you to log in and participate in discussions, polls, and news stories related to Microsoft's release of the XP line of products." There are some interesting links on this page if you (or someone with purchasing power at your company) is considering XP.

'PARASITIC' COMPUTING
Researchers at the University of Notre Dame have demonstrated "parasitic" computing -- using other people's servers to do your own processing.  Although several projects have harnessed the power of distributed computing for a common research goal, the difference here is that the Notre Dame researchers didn't ask the other server owners' permission. The methodology exploits technical protocols that ensure reliable communication by, in effect, turning the Internet into a distributed computer. Servers can then be harnessed to perform computations on behalf of an uninvited users, solving complex mathematical problems while engaging in standard communications. (InfoWorld 30 Aug 2001)

Welcome!   This is going to be an interesting class - this is the first time that I have taught out at the West Campus location, and also the first time I have taught this class in an eight-week session.

COBA is going wireless!  Dean Pitts has approved the installation of wireless transmitters in the Eppley building.  We will be placing two transmitters on the first floor, one each on the second and third floors, and two on the fourth floor.  This should be exciting!

The Powerpoints from the publishers are *still* not here.  As soon as they arrive I will post them on the site and update the link from here.

For those of you that didn't know the change in our Internet connection that happened last October, here is a graphic that shows the difference.  When we get into the networking chapter, we will discuss this in more depth.  Thanks to Jay Langhurst for this graphic.

Here's what our new, fast Internet connection will look like!
